Check Your Services, Save Some Cash

If you have the big stuff in order financially (or even if you don’t), you could still be spending more than you need to on monthly bills and plans. With the end of the year just a few months away and holiday madness around the corner, now is the perfect time to sit down with your accounts to see if you have any “money leaks” that need fixing. A few things to look at:

1. Movie services. Do you have a DVD mail service with similar movies to those you get via cable (or vice versa)? Would a downgraded plan work just fine? Could borrowing DVDs from the library or buying used do the trick? 2. Roadside assistance. I found out recently that my auto insurance includes roadside assistance—I was paying double for the service through another company. Doh. Its worth looking into… 3. Cable. Being a closet cable junkie myself, Im not going to suggest you ditch it completely (although there are ways to get your shows via less expensive means). But it’s always smart to look at your bill and consider whether you’re paying for channels or services you just don’t use. 4. Cell phone plan. Take a look at your bills from the last few months. Are you going way under or above your minutes or texts? If so, give your provider a call to see if another plan could be costing you less. 5. Credit card interest rates. It’s a great idea to call your credit card providers periodically to see if they can lower your interest rate. Often, they can and will.

An hour of looking through bills and making a few calls could save you hundreds each month—thousands per year. Sometimes it pays to be pennywise.
