Fun, Free Stuff to Do With Time Off

You probably have a few days off this week. And while your schedule might be filled with family time or events, there is bound to be some downtime. In case you have some guests to entertain or you’ll be tempted to hit up the stores unnecessarily, here are a few ways to get your jollies without spending a dime:

1. Paint it red. Getting creative is one of the best ways to spend a day off—whether you’re solo, with friends or family. If you have finger paints or watercolors, just spread out a big sheet of paper and paint away.

2. Urban (suburban/rural) hike. All it takes is a pair of comfortable shoes. Wherever you are this week, take some time to get out and check out the holiday lights—and scenery.

3. Pickup game. If a walk sounds a little yawn, grab a soccerball, basketball or Frisbee and head to your local park to get your game on.

4. Help an elderly or disabled friend or neighbor. The holidays can be especially hard on the elderly and disabled. Baking a little something, offering to run an errand or just stopping by to say hello can make a world of difference.

5. Donate your time. Your local soup kitchen, church, hospital, shelter or other organization will be grateful for your help, and you’ll be glad you did it.

6. Reach out. Call a friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while and catch up.

7. Make ornaments. Get together whatever you have around the house: glue, colored paper, glitter, magazines, photos; get creative; attach a string or ribbon loop to the top and you’re golden.

8. Talent show. Have every willing person in the house show off what they can do: singing, playing an instrument, giving a monologue, reading something they’ve written, teaching a dance step—no serious talent required.

9. Bake something from scratch. Most of us have the ingredients for some kind of cookies, muffins, cake or bread. Take them to a neighbor for double the fun.

10. Curl up and chill out. ‘Tis the perfect time to relax with that book you’ve been meaning to read.

There it is—you don’t need an expensive meal out, a budget-bending shopping spree or a trip to the movies to have a good time this week. And you might just have a more meaningful time, too.
